Sedano’s Supermarkets with the support of its employees and consumers raised $64,804 during the 7th-annual Autism Speaks Miami Walk Puzzle Pieces pinup campaign to benefit Autism Speaks, which is leading the way we understand research and advocacy dedicated to addressing the most urgent needs of our autism community.
During the month-long Autism Speaks Miami Walk Puzzle Pieces pinup promotion, participating Sedano’s locations statewide asked patrons to donate $1 to support the mission of enhancing understanding and acceptance of autism. In exchange, consumers received a Puzzle Piece-themed pinup to personalize for display at their stores.
“At Sedano’s, we look forward to opportunities like this during which we can come together to serve our community. Through this campaign, we were able to showcase the strength in working together for a wonderful cause,” said Chief Marketing Officer, Javier Herran. “We are thankful to our customers and employees, who continuously help us make a positive impact within our community – our familia. It is because of them that we were able to surpass our goal.”
This is the 7th year Sedano’s has participated in the annual Autism Speaks Miami Walk Puzzle Pieces promotion, raising more than $450,000 for Autism Speaks. In 2010, Sedano’s adopted the Autism Speaks Miami Walk Puzzle Pieces pinup promotion as its official fundraising project in support of the autism community. It has grown to include the support of local brands like IMUSA USA, who every year donates weekly prizes from their product line to recognize Sedano’s top cashiers for their efforts in the campaign.
“The support of Sedano’s and its customers during one of the most anticipated times of the year for Autism Speaks is priceless,” said Carolina Lizarralde, Executive Director with Autism Speaks. “The funds from giving just $1 at-a-time added up to a big impact for the individuals with autism and their families. Beyond the dollars raised, the summer is a special time of year for families and it’s one more special moment to celebrate the understanding and acceptance of autism.”
Because of the support of Sedano’s, Autism Speaks can continue to ensure access to reliable information and services throughout the life span.

About Autism

Autism, or autism spectrum disorder, refers to a broad range of conditions characterized by challenges with social skills, repetitive behaviors, speech and nonverbal communication. We now know that there is not one autism but many subtypes, and each person with autism can have unique strengths and challenges. Most are caused by a combination of genetic and environmental influences, and many are accompanied by medical issues such as GI disorders, seizures and sleep disturbances. The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) estimates 1 in 68 children is on the autism spectrum.

About Autism Speaks

Autism Speaks is dedicated to promoting solutions, across the spectrum and throughout the life span, for the needs of individuals with autism and their families. We do this through advocacy and support; increasing understanding and acceptance of autism spectrum disorder; and advancing research into causes and better interventions for autism spectrum disorder and related conditions. We empower people with autism and their families with resources, online tools and information covering the life span. Go to AutismSpeaks.org to learn more, donate or join a fundraising walk.
